Gold news

[Music] [Music] I'm Charlotte McLoud with investing news.com and Q with me is Raymond Goldie president of pdac thank you so much for being here although really I'm here with you this is pdac It's Your convention thank you so much for having me thank you very much for being here Charlotte of course and we've made it now this is the morning of the second day right so we we've had some time to take it in and I wondered if you could just give me your impressions things you're seeing

sentiment on the floor how is it looking to you the S sentiment on the floor is a we life rest your Missi what the top of mind for almost everyone is critical minerals and the fact that the government uh governments around the world in fact have become more and more convinced that if we are to engage in the two transitions that we have one transition being electrification the other being digitization uh the continuation of both of those transitions requires lots of minerals so that's the top of line for

everyone but we have to also bear in mind that a lot of our members and especially Junior uh resource companies are finding a great deal of difficulty in raising Capital so that's probably the number two topic how do we how do we raise money and I think one of the ways that we're looking at is that loyalty companies for example or family offices are stepping in uh where uh Equity markets used to be before okay those are those are really interesting Trends and I think we'll we'll come back to those

definitely worth discussing before we do I wanted to just give our audience some background on yourself and how you came to the mining industry how you ended up in Canada so maybe we we go into a little bit of detail on that well how did I come to Canada well I I grew up in New Zealand well was and got my bachelor Dee and and that was that was your wife with my wife and so we were absolutely delighted a few months first grandchild was B she is right here oh amazing amazing and I think like many people who

become PD PD president you have a long background in the mining industry and probably also with the organization itself I was going to ask you know you're a year into your as president what what would you say your biggest accomplishment has has been so far I think my biggest accomplishment at the pdac has not been the work I've I've done in the last actually it's 5 years since I was elected president it's a long process of becoming seen first second and and the second vice president

first vice president and then president which I reached now but I really look back 35 years because 35 years ago the uh mining industry was not involed very good shape the uh Premier company in those days was naranda the chief executive officer of naranda used to say well these days I'm sleeping like a baby every two hours I wake up and cry and you imagine our membership was doing that so we a group of us at the pdu wanted to know what can we do to arisk that and someone had the bright idea

that across the street for the RO Europe which is where we've always held that convention since 1932 across the street there was this building being uh created and called the Metro Toronto Convention Center why didn't we why are we looking to move it over to there and well we're too small for that uh okay so let's let's become an international organization now that we've got the room to expand and so what I've seen here today at the convention is the realization of a 35-year-old

dream wow so your your history is really integrated with this building that's very interesting and I was going to ask you you know changes that you've seen at pdac over the years I read one of your your previous interviews where I think you mentioned you also had the idea for the cor Shack downstairs so I thought that could be interesting to talk about as well that was actually earlier than uh the 1980s it was in the 1970s when uh I was with a group of people going to the uh the new hler discovery and I

found that all the geologists on that trip all they wanted to see was the jewel core that had come out of the holes being uh put in into the hler deposit when I realized that uh the boxes of walk core actually a huge attraction for a lot of the people in the mining business but why don't we have a core Shack at the at the convention and not only make it uh for uh for uh for mining companies but but also expiration companies and it's now got to the point where we have to turn them away the so such an enthusiasm on

the part of companies to display their drill core wow and you know when I go when I go down and take a look it is always one of the busier areas around there I think people like to have something to look at you're definitely right the sparkle we're looking for VG visible gold oh there it is there it is yeah you can see it right there so so we've talked a little bit about the past of the organization and the convention looking forward to the future maybe you can talk a little bit more about pdc's

pdc's goals I know there's a lot of fol we talked about critical leros we talked about financing I know there's a big focus on ESG so looking forward to the future looking forward to the future well in uh 20 uh 13 we came up with a strategic plan in which we Rec recognize that there's three purposes to the pdac it's giving our members access to Capital Access to land and access to skills and so the future of the pdci I is very much addressing those three key areas and one of the issues in act both access to land

and skilled people is uh forming stronger relationships with indigenous people they live there they're a natur our natural allies in the north we want to work with them H in uh in realizing the uh the blessings that we have in in that part of the world and we we talked a little bit by email before pdcu some some comments for our prep pdac article that we put together for our audience and you'd mentioned you'd like to see Canada focus more on mind development as well as mineral processing so I I think there's

really a growing realization about how important it is for countries to pursue supply chain security how how well do you think Canada is doing at this point uh that remains to be seen because one of the things that we we want to as an example reare Earth in North America all of rare Earths that are being mined either in the US or Canada has to be sent to China to have be refined because we don't have that technology we're working on it we're developing it it's too early to say how successful we are

at implementing commercializing and and expanding that that you see is a similar story that uh it's not it's a new uh it's a commodity that's new to most of us and downstream processing something we're still working on and that pdac certainly encourages the Canadian government in investing in Downstream processing yeah I think it it does remain to be seen and one thing I find interesting is you know Canada I think Canada is concerned about foreign investment in some of the mining

companies here they they don't necessarily want to see other countries coming in and and having that access but you know are are we seeing enough from inside Canada so that we don't have to have that well uh just thinking the single biggest mining development in Canada right now up to8 Billion to could be spent would be the Jensen podes project in saskin that's Australian money coming in and in fact the Australians seem to be better at raising money than we are in North America and uh more of the

money that the Australians raise from Australian investors in Australia is being spent here in Canada than in Australia itself yeah we have we have an Australian part of our business as well and I do I do see that theme coming through so yeah definitely lots of different issues going on and whining today things for us to pay attention to any other topics that you are watching right now that you would want investors to be aware of oh I U well i' I'd like to know the answer to this question and I I don't have an

answer but why are Canadian retail investors much less interest Ed in junior resource equities than Australian re investors for example uh and certainly there's been a change in in Canada uh compared with everyone's grandfather or grandmother would would own a Mining stock or two that that's not part of a culture anymore no I I really don't know the answer to that question either no I'm so sorry although you know I've heard you know maybe it's a capital Market situation where

Australia is a little bit more open any any thoughts in that direction uh I I I think it's a big area to of discussion men because there also of factors resolved yeah so we we'll need somebody to help us with the answers to those questions but for now for now any final thoughts on PDC that you want to leave people with well the the final thought will be that in one year and 3 days uh I will be stepping down from being president and Karen ree will take over and I I look forward to your interviewing Karen Reese because

she will do a a great job as PDC president and and an interfere year Charlotte very good well I'll I'll look forward to that I find I always enjoy these conversations with each each new president every year so very good to have you here thank you so much for taking time out of I'm sure you're very busy schedule to come chat for a minute that you're right it it is very very thank you Sherman so we'll send you back out on the floor thank you very much once again I'm Charlotte McLoud with
