[Music] I'm Charlotte McLoud with investing news.com and here today with me is De laage director at RM Corporate Finance thank you so much for being here great having night yeah really good to have you here and good to be meeting you this is our first time talking so where I thought we could start with is just a brief introduction to yourself and your work in the mining industry sure uh where I uh mating SI stop breaker in Perth we've got a wealth management Division and a corporate finance
division uh investing in natural resources all around the world and particular focus in uh North America at the moment so um plenty of opportunities here and uh really pleased to be here again yeah yeah all the way from Australia here at pdac hope it's going well for you here I wanted to I think that our audience has a a pretty strong grasp on what's going on on in North America in terms of mining industry Trends and it sounds like you've got a an interest in North America as well but
before we go over there they may not be as familiar with what's going on in in Australia so any any resource industry trends that you're watching closely over there yeah uh well there's been a a big uptake in um gold stocks obviously in the last 12 months we had lithium uh the last two years that sort of dropped off a bit um but a lot of investment in West Australia particular uh but a lot more investment into Canada um over the last s 12 months and maybe we talk a little bit about you mentioned gold over there of
course any other metals that are getting Traction in Australia this uh there's plenty of interest in uh copper uranium uh and more recently in timy I guess um so uh but there's still investment in other special meals like tungsten so we're seeing you know broad interest across the Commodities yeah and for you do you are you focusing on specific Metals right now or the ones that you like are you pretty agnostic to that how do you feel um I wouldn't say we agnostic I think the primary focus is probably copper and
uranium uh there has been um interested in especially medals but that's a less of part of our business and we'll talk about you know you've got this interest in in North America as you mentioned but I wanted to I guess highlight some of the different between Canada and Australia right now what's the the financing environment like in Australia at this time um we' probably heard of The 100 times before but uh ASX is probably the premier resources Market in the world at the moment um I think the trend that we've
seen is uh you know the banks got control the brokerage houses here and a lot of those funds have gone to the Pension funds and mutual funds so that money's been uh hasn't been invested back into resources uh we haven't had that Trend in Australia there is a a trend towards manage funds um uh but not to the same extent that we're seeing in Canada so I think we've got a more buoyant you know resources natural resources Market yeah certainly that is something that I've heard quite
quite frequently in terms of the differences between the the two markets and you mentioned kind of that institutional level I also hear that there's more at the retail level just a culture of investing in in mining stocks in Australia versus here would you say that yeah well that retail Market was alive and well uh 18 years ago and certainly when I was here in the early 90s was a very big retail Market but that retail Market's very strong in Australia at the moment yeah pretty interesting and so you you mentioned
you're looking over at North America right now why is that why why are you looking over here uh well there some great resource opportunities we've invest a lot of money into Newland Labrador uh none of it um the quality few Australian company he's looking for copper up in the NIT region um I suppose the reason we're here is you know we're filling a gap um it's difficult for companies to raise you know1 to5 million dollars in Toronto it's actually not that hard to raise $50 to100 million in
Canada but that smaller end is difficult and that's a sort of void that we're filling at the moment all right and you know are there any anything more you can say about specific opportunities that you're you're seeing over here compan that you're looking at um it's hard say to pinpoint uh any particular opportunities but broadly I'd say there's more opportunity for Australians to invest in Canada North America and in fact lot of the markets that the Canadians were investing in South
America for example I mean you know generally the money's dried up for junior exploration in Canada so really that is the opportunity so you know we're looking around the world and um you know this is still the premier uh Mining and basement con uh conference in the world so this is a great place to come and uh look for opportunities yeah yeah it sounds it sounds pretty good like an opportunity for you do you see the the financing environment changing in Canada or are we kind of stuck like
this well there's a few things that uh we'd like to see change um I think they should tighten the regulations around Short Selling um flow through has been very good uh we've done charity flow through it's been positive but um I think there has to be a change at the top down level so you know the the banks and the brokerage houses have to open up to Junior exploration but um when the Cannabis uh boom uh came to an end a lot of that speculative money dried up and it's now competing with you know
cryptocurrencies Sports bet uh this other sort of highrisk investment so you know uh resources is only one opportunity and that high risk end so but I think there's there's more that can be done in Canada to stimulate exploration and investement for sure yeah yeah any any specific things that you would say this is an an area to pursue um it's hard to well apart from the short selling and the and and really the attitude of the banks and and wanting to clients to take less risk and and and
have more of a portfolio management um you know pulled funds investment attitude um probably relaxing um not saying relaxing but making uh approve the approval process in places like ontaro Quebec a bit easier uh has been a bit slow but you know parts of Australia is slower and other parts of the world are um you know the short selling is a big one uh I think that's really uh makes it very difficult for juniors here yeah yeah certainly that is that's a comment that I hear quite frequently
so you know looking at companies when I asked people you know how do you EV evaluate mining stocks a lot of the time the first thing they say is they're looking at the management right I wondered if you had a different approach or a similar approach I know you have a background as as a geologist so I thought that might be interesting to look at yeah well certainly we've got a strong technical bent yeah and uh you know looking I mean really what we're looking for is potentially tier one
assets in stable jurisdictions now that's very very hard to find because uh stable jurisdictions are are diminishing by the hour around the world as our tier one assets so uh certainly looking at strong management but looking at Commodities I think going to be in demand and I think copper and uranium a front of our mind at the moment um you know Uranian has been a bit soft but I think that's going to have another run next year so uh we're putting a lot of effort into that yeah yeah definitely I
think that that'll make people a little bit happy to hear that you you see that coming for for radio any anything else you would add there on that that potential um well look uh one that's probably been looked over is nickel you know that's had a tough few years with the uh Indonesia accounting for I think 30 40% of world production uh even a bit more um so that's a bit of a coun of seekely fill opportunity potentially um but um you obviously Gold's been running hard there's a lot of interestes in Gold
so a lot of these low depos low grow deposits around the world are getting a lot of attentions so uh we're sit looking at Gold opportunities yeah and I want to ask you a little bit more about jurisdiction as well you kind of mentioned that the stable jur jurisdictions seem to be just evaporating by the moment so what how how do you deal with those fluctuations how do you determine what what is safe and May hopefully stay safe uh let's uh on a Case by case basis I mean uh we've had a lot of headaches in West Africa so
BINA Faso Mary uh ner uh so one of the things we're looking at is is making sure we go into that jurisdiction uh through another jurisdiction that has a treaty with countries in Africa for example uh we're seeing some instability in uh mosan Beque uh which was stable for quite a long time so uh Africa is uh pretty difficult you know getting places like Peru that's socially uh challenging um so um you know it's it's sort of really on a Case by case basis but in particular in Uranian it's only sort of
six countries that really accept uranium expiration and Mining so um uh those opportunities are limited because obviously the the tenm um competition's increasing so we talked a little bit about what you like to see in a company when you're doing these evaluations any any red flags that you would highlight I know we talked about jurisdiction anything else that you look at and well I think management performance I was listening to a presentation at redcloud um yesterday uh and the presenter um uh
who's sitting just over here in fact uh did mention he had a list of people have lied to him over the years so obviously looking at management with track records important um you know ability to get permits uh stable jurisdictions T1 assets uh you know and our ability to finance those projects over the longer term so um yeah narrows it down a very small field of projects and companies we can invest in yeah yeah okay so good to look at kind of your your criteria that you go over I also wanted to talk about you
mentioned these crossborder opportunities right between Canada and Australia so any anything you would share on you know investors in Canada who want to invest in an Australian company yeah or vice versa any anything they should be aware of things to know about that um well culturally the the investment climate's quite different you know the way transactions are done are quite different uh the trend is for Australian companies uh acquiring Canadian assets or investing directly or doing joint ventures with Australian
companies so there's a lot of good assets sitting in uh venture or CC listed uh companies that aren't doing a lot um but Now with uh investment opening up around the world there's no reason they can't be investing directly into ISX equities you know it's good liquidity uh good support um and that traditionally hasn't happened in Canada it's been more Canada Centric so you know I'd encourage the investors here to Branch out and you know buy some Aussie stocks yeah yeah maybe they should buy
the Canadian ones first before they do that L yeah yeah all right well this has been this has been pretty interesting but before I let you go any any other thoughts on either Australian or North American Resource markets that you have on your mind right now that you think investors should be aware of um look I think the um one of the things that's changed around the world is the permitting and approval process uh and obviously First Nations are uh are part of that approval process as well so um you know I'm not
saying that the governments have got to uh you know become more LAX on on on permitting or or indigenous Affairs but maybe more streamlining and acceleration of of that approval process um but you know the US is opening up uh Nevada and Arizona good jurisdictions um you know the US is a bit more complicated um you know it's it's already a state byst state Proposition yeah okay well I think thank you so much for coming on to go over what's happening in these markets really good to have you and we'll let you get
back on to the show floor thank you so foring of course see you next year yeah or hopefully sooner we'll see all right and once again I'm Charlotte McLoud with investing.com and this is Gila [Music]
